On Thursday 30th October 2014, history was made in London’s Earls Court when bass superstars Chase & Status and Rage, Original Digital Soundboy Shy FX and Soundclash King and reggae legend David Rodigan, took to the stage and performed for the very first time as Rebel Sound.
Formed especially for the Red Bull Culture Clash 2014, Rebel Sound prepared for months, secretively cutting dubplates and working with some of the biggest names in the UK and across the world, to arm themselves to take on the 3 other crews in the Culture Clash; Tottenham grime crew BBK (reigning champions), Stone Love and New York’s A$AP Mob.
On the night of the 30th October, after months of hard work, Rebel Sound took to the stage and unleashed a slew of dubplates from everyone from Emile Sande, to Beanieman, to UK Apache, to Pusha T and many more in between. They brought Sir Trevor MCDonald out of retirement to record a special ‘news report’ that opened the first round, and had a subsequent video from ‘People Do Nothing’. In the second round they brought out a special guest, the explosive Tempa T. In a show that Zane Lowe described as “Perfect”, the crowd spoke, and showed their appreciation by making the most noise for Rebel Sound, who went on to win 3 out of 4 rounds, and ultimately, the title of Red Bull Culture Clash Champions 2014.
For those that weren’t able to get one of the 20,000 tickets sold for the night, Red Bull streamed the whole show live on YouTube and generated a huge amount of buzz online both leading up to, and during the show. With over 500,000 viewers, the hype was off the scale. For the majority of the 4 hour show ‘Rebel Sound’ was trending in the Number 1 position worldwide.
Support from other artists and celebrities on Twitter was huge, with everyone from Lily Allen, to Rio Ferdinand, to Example backing the supergroup to win.
After such an explosive start for Rebel Sound, the question on everybody’s lips is what is next for this incredible collection of artists. 2015 holds some exciting moments in store for Rebel Sound, and it has been made clear that the world certainly wants to see more of what they have in store!
